FROM THE RIVER TO THE STAGE

The Horse of Jenin

“The horse in Arabic is a symbol of freedom. But to us, this horse is much more. This horse is us.”

Combining storytelling, standup comedy, and mask performance, The Horse of Jenin is constructed from fragments of Palestinian actor and comedian Alaa Shehada’s own memories—including the actual Horse of Jenin sculpture built from rubble after the 2003 invasion—and stands as an ode to the power of imagination and the resilience it brings. Exclusive in-person Seattle screening of Alaa's 80-minute performance at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025, followed by a talkback with local liberation artists.

"Thank you for this powerful performance and for sharing these testimonies of real life for people whose resilience is a model for so many in the world, a lot of whom are only experiencing hardships for the first time."
